Bush shot back via Twitter on Friday, saying Trump was “pathetic” to criticize his older brother on 9/11. The number of people who said the could not support him fell to 35 percent from just over 50 percent in the previous poll, showing that Trump may be starting to win over more voters. “Of course, if he wins the nomination, I’ll be back here next year telling you that doesn’t matter”, he joked.
Although all 19 hijackers in the 9/11 attacks were in the U.S. legally on temporary visas, a 9/11 commission report acknowledged serious flaws in the system that granted their applications.
Bush has spent the past several days defending his brother against Trump, who’s been blasting George W. Bush for letting 9/11 happen on his watch.
“Across the spectrum of foreign policy, Trump talks about things as though he’s still on ‘The Apprentice“, he remarked. The insinuation, of course, was his brother was a bad president, thus Jeb Bush would be one, too.
On the other hand, the skirmish has resurrected a larger debate about whether President Bush did all that he could in the run-up to the attacks and how he responded, including in the now-unpopular decision to invade Iraq. But, “I wouldn’t say that George W. Bush is to blame”.
