Dubbed “Who’s Down“, the app, which was released silently with – for reasons best known to Google itself – a marked lack of fanfare, is a way to keep track of Friends that are available to hang out.

According to 9to5Google, which first spotted the app, you can let your friends know you are ready to “hang out” with one slider. The app can help Google increase engagement among its users on Google Hangouts. When people show interest in grouping for your activity, the app takes you to a chat room where all the conversations will disappear after 24 hours of last activity. A user can also provide a list of what appear to be popular or intelligently guessed selections.
It has been told the new app is presently invite-only and is restricted to college students.
Google has been trying hard to make its mark in the social network segment.
It’s also odd that this is a stand-alone app. Who’s Down seems like a feature that might otherwise be integrated with Google Maps or ‘Google+’. “After selecting I was “down to hang”, the app ostensibly began waiting for other people to signal that they were interested in the same”.
There have been fewer and fewer new Google apps as the company expand into every conceivable web and mobile market, but they still manage to surprise us every now and then.
