National Football League roundup: Broncos unbeaten, hand Packers first loss

The Green Bay offense was overwhelmed by the NFL’s best defense, with the receivers unable to gain separation and the offensive line unable to protect its quarterback.

Ronnie Hillman (19 carries, 60 yards) paced the ground game early with two rushing touchdowns as Denver opened up a 14-0 lead, and C.J. Anderson finally came alive following weeks of plodding around the line of scrimmage.

– Russell Wilson had a scoring pass for the game’s only touchdown and directed a late drive to the winning field goal, leading the Seattle Seahawks over the Dallas Cowboys 13-12.

The Packers again capitalized on a third down penalty early in the third quarter after a pass interference call on Denver kept the drive alive and led to a 56-yard field goal by Mason Crosby to cut the lead to 17-10.

Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead each had two touchdown catches for the Saints (4-4), who have won four of five after a 0-3 start.

But the return of the run game was even more critical in the Broncos’ quest to remain undefeated.

The Packers opened the second half with the ball. Peyton Manning completed 21 of 29 passes for 340 yards and an interception, and that was all the Broncos defense needed as it clamped down on Aaron Rodgers.

The Broncos are now 7-0 with the wobbly Indianapolis Colts coming up in Week 9. “It was kind of what I expected, there were going to be a few rough times, rough patches and rough parts of the transition”.

Michael Floyd had a 60-yard TD catch and tight end Troy Niklas had two short TD receptions to help the Cardinals overcome four turnovers and win in Cleveland for the first time since 1985.

The 49ers (2-6) were hit hard by injuries, losing Reggie Bush early, and haven’t scored a touchdown in two games.

Minnesota 23, (at) Chicago 20: Adrian Peterson ran for 103 yards and Blair Walsh kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired.

But because of the coverage, he didn’t have many options downfield when he was flushed from the pocket, which led to a 77-yard night.

“Being the underdog at home made us mad”, Harris said, per Palmer.

“It was just a big measuring stick for the whole team and everybody really took that to heart and stepped up to the challenge”, said DeMarcus Ware, whose fourth-quarter sack of Rodgers resulted in a safety. The Rams, who are 4-3, are 3-0 against the NFC West for the first time since 2004.

Manning didn’t throw a touchdown pass hours after brother Eli lost despite throwing six of them. The game is a battle of unbeaten teams, with both teams at 6 and 0, but it is also a game between two contrasting teams. Matt Ryan tied the game for the Falcons, who are 6-2, with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones with 17 seconds left in regulation.

Ouch: Cornerback Sam Shields left in the first quarter with a shoulder injury, and fellow cornerback Quinten Rollins departed with the same injury shortly after that.

-Brian Hoyer threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns and Houston tied a franchise record with seven sacks as the Texans beat the Titans 20-6.

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith accounted for three touchdowns and set a career-high with 78 rushing yards and one of four touchdowns on the ground. Anderson came in and put up 101 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
