Do not invest more money than you can afford to lose.
Right-wing publications alerted readers to the connection late last week, and a Change.org petition started by Steven Policastro presently has 672 supporters and climbing. The petition states that the company’s support would be contrary to their “corporate stance on Christian values regarding marriage and stewardship”.
Terry Mattingly at the media-analysis site GetReligion wonders why no one outside the religious or conservative media discovered this story at Baptistnews.com: “Chik-fil-A [sic] challenged for sponsoring LGBT-themed film festival”.
A representative from Chick-fil-A responded to the Eater article, saying the sponsor was actually a franchise owner. “He said, ‘Every leader goes through different phases of maturity, growth and development and it helps by recognizing the mistakes that you make, and you learn from those mistakes”.
However, the Level Ground donation came from a Nashville, TN Chick-fil-a franchise owner, not the national company.
Nonetheless, as Badash noted, “Conservative media outlets are sharing in the petition creator’s outrage”.
LaBarbera believes the average American probably doesn’t know Chick-fil-A has moved to a more neutral position on the issue, and whether the company “will allow its good name to be used to promote immoral activity”. They’ve just agreed to stop funding anti-gay groups and have stopped, at least for now, voicing ugly anti-LGBT rhetoric.
Three years after evangelical Christians designated a day to eat more chicken in support of Chick-fil-A’s defense of traditional marriage, the Southern Baptist-owned fast food chain is taking heat online for sponsoring what is billed as the world’s first faith-based LGBT film festival. “Per our research and findings, Chick-fil-A is a sponsor of “On Level Ground” which is “a movement” that “creates space for dialogue about faith, gender, and sexuality through the arts”.
