In response to a deadly shooting spree in California by two Muslims whom the Federal Bureau of Investigation said had been radicalized, Trump called for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States “until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on“.

The disclosure came one day after Trump’s controversial proposal to temporarily ban all Muslims from entering the United States amid concerns about violent extremism.

“It reminds me of that very sordid period in American history when Franklin Delano Roosevelt imposed internment camps on Japanese American citizens”, says Wadhams. “What somebody like Trump is trying to do is divide us”.

The property billionaire and reality TV star later said it would not apply to people living in the US.

Most of Trump’s rival Republican candidates were equally forthright. U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey said Tuesday on Twitter than Trump was “wrong“, and that the U.S. should not have a religious test for entry to the country.

U.K. Chancellor George Osborne appeared to reject the petition Wednesday, saying it may be more helpful to engage in conversation than to ban Trump from the U.K.

On Tuesday, he advocated tracking anyone who enters the United States.

Muhammad, who, ironically, was speaking with The Gleaner from his family home in the U.S., where he is visiting for a few months, said the moment Trump made the statement; it sparked discussion in Muslim communities around the world.

Trump’s campaign has been marked by a pattern of inflammatory statements and he kicked off his campaign with a speech in which he said some Mexican immigrants are rapists and criminals.

Trump, for whom the comments were extreme even by his populist standards, was similarly lambasted by leading Republicans and campaign rivals.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Republicans and Democrats, all condemned Trump’s anti-Muslim remarks.

The prime minister’s official representative has said David Cameron “completely disagrees with Donald Trump”.

Meanwhile, the SNP’s trade and investment spokesperson Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh backed calls for Trump to be banned, saying: “Does what Donald Trump has said amount to hate preaching? And more importantly, it’s not what this country stands for”.
