The New York State Restaurant Association, a trade group, sent a letter Tuesday to Mr. Cuomo and other government officials seeking a five-year freeze in the minimum wage for tipped workers. No cities in Whatcom County will have a higher minimum wage than the state level. “Raising the national minimum wage would be good for families, with millions no longer needing food assistance and 23 percent of all children seeing at least one parent get a raise”, she stated.
“I already pay everyone more than minimum wage so that doesn’t impact me, except for the tip workers”. This includes food service workers, service employees, and service employees in resort hotels, Mr. Cuomo’s office said in a statement.
“This increase in the minimum wage is California’s second increase in 18 months”, said Labor Commissioner Julie Su in a press release.
The minimum wage will increase again to $11 an hour in January of 2017.
In the third of three annual changes secured by Governor Cuomo in 2013, New York State’s minimum wage will be $9.00 per hour. Two union factions have submitted competing minimum wage ballot initiatives for 2016.
Fast food workers will receive an increase to $10.50 in New York City and $9.75 throughout the rest of New York State.
On Jan. 1, 10 states – Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Rhode Island and Vermont – will implement higher wages.
Grocers backed a bill in the state Legislature this year to keep the minimum wage at $8 for most student workers 18 and younger.
“An increase in the minimum wage without an appropriate adjustment to the employer PRSI threshold would disproportionately damage small employers relative to their larger competitors”.
