Indiegogo, one of the largest US crowdfunding platforms by funds raised, which also has global operations, said it is adding the credit card payment option for fixed funding campaigns.
The service is provided through the online payment processing company Stripe. The integration with Stripe allows the backer’s credit card to be charged upon contribution, not at the end of the campaign. In this way the entrepreneurs can know exactly how much funding they will get at the end of the campaign.
According to Indiegogo, when cards are charged at the end of the fundraiser on other platforms, entrepreneurs often lose contributions sometimes in the thousands of dollars, because backers’ credit cards are rejected or declined at the end of the campaign. As per Indiegogo’s rules (and generally on the major crowdfunding platforms), the fixed funding campaigns have a specific funding goal that must be met and if this does not happen, all contributions are returned.
Indiegogo is a reward-based crowdfunding platform in which financial backers get a gift or a discount for the product or service offered, instead of equity in the company offering it. Indiegogo also accepts payments with credit cards, debit cards, and ACH payments drawn directly from contributors’ bank accounts.
In September the platform announced it is adding support for Apple Pay in Apple’s browser Safari.
