Barclays suffers”technical issues” as a few customers are unable to access cash

Do not invest more money than you can afford to lose.

Barclays customers have been reporting difficulties accessing money in their own bank accounts, and also in making payments, on Saturday and Sunday.

The bank told customers via Twitter on Saturday morning it was experiencing technical issues, but it was being dealt with as quickly as possible.

The problem began yesterday and has been blamed on routine maintenance scheduled to coincide with the clocks going back.

But customers vented on the social network when they discovered the problem, which was not caused by hackers.

Barclays tweeted around midday on Saturday that it was investigating technical problems.

A number of customers contacted the bank via Twitter to complain of issues with their debit cards and online banking.

A spokesperson told the BBC on Sunday that it was an “internal systems problem”. A spokesman said that because the banks’ computers were down staff in the call centres were unable to access personal details.

Data stolen does not allow criminals to plunder customers’ bank accounts, TalkTalk has said.

The problem at Barclays is the latest computer failure to affect bank customers. Royal Bank of Scotland was fined £56m for a meltdown in 2012 that left millions of customers locked out of their accounts for days.

In an emailed statement, Barclays said: “We can confirm that customer services are now recovering from the outage we experienced yesterday [Saturday]”.
