You can hold down a button to separate the screen from its base, transforming the Surface Book into a surprisingly lightweight and very powerful tablet. The Verge cited issues with syncing Mail and Calendar apps with Google Apps, and issues with crashes in the Microsoft Store, but noted Windows 10 with bugs is preferable to Windows 8.1.

The competition seems stiff between Apple MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface Pro 4.
The Surface Book is “astonishingly expensive”, said Ars Technica’s Peter Bright. The gray magnesium body is a handsome combination of razor-straight lines and rounded corners. Rather, the Surface Pro 4 casts aside the burden of being Microsoft’s lone vision for personal computing, and now it can just be the best Surface it can be. While the Surface Pro 4 tablet can replace a notebook, the Surface Book can be a high-end notebook PC. You won’t want to go back to the Surface Pro 3-and that’s coming from someone who had no complaints about the Surface Pro 3’s screen to begin with. While its Pro Slate 12 is a competent machine that’s reasonably priced compared to a few rivals, it’s a little tiresome. The top half of the Surface Book is a detachable tablet that supports its Pen accessory. The worst one is related to a known hardware malfunction that Microsoft says won’t be in the devices shipping to consumers next week. Adding the LTE option would more than likely put that price up to $1,119, and then you’ve got the $129 (at least) for the new Type keyboard, which would bring the total up to $1,248.99 before taxes. That’s significantly denser than the Surface Pro 3’s impressive 2160×1440 resolution. These elements are make or break-get them right and nothing else really matters; get them wrong and your customers will curse you every single time they have to use one of your systems. But Microsoft is the first one to get it right. I’m now writing to you on this loaner Surface Book plugged into the new Surface Dock, powering two Apple Cinema Displays at the office. From there, you can use it as a standalone tablet-sorry, a portable clipboard-or reattach it to the keyboard base, either frontwards (as a laptop) or backwards (as a creative canvas or in presentation mode).
Even more interesting is the fact that the hinge’s design doesn’t let you perfectly close the laptop, which means Microsoft was able to improve the keyboard experience.
You can turn the screen around and fold it down over the keyboard, making it a canvas for an artist.
“We discovered a few of the units had solid state drives that were failing”, Panos Panay, corporate vice president of Microsoft Devices, told me. Meanwhile when it comes to connectivity options Surface Pro 4 comes with 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (LE), full-size USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort and microSD card reader. While most reported that typing is comfortable and an improvement over the Surface Pro 3, it’s not as sturdy as a traditional laptop keyboard. It comes with a dedicated graphics processor, ports and extra batteries. That chip is great if you want to run graphically intensive programs such as Photoshop or PC games. At an important Surface event previous year, there was an overwhelming display of Apple gadgets at its own event.
Technology has seen a major shift of gears and the companies have all been quick to react to these changes.
One of the most anticipated features of the Surface Pro 4 is its front-facing infrared camera, which uses the Windows Hello feature to authenticate a user based on facial recognition.
The controller used in the Surface Book is called G5.
Oddly enough, Surface Book doesn’t enter Tablet mode automatically when you remove the screen, nor does it even prompt you to do so. The MacBook Pro, by comparison, has just 227 pixels per inch. The Surface Book’s keyboard is functional and quick.
Also, the Surface Book is not particularly light or small.
With its Surface Book range, Microsoft is setting its sights on the hybrid 2-in-1 market. That made re-watching the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens 47 times – purely for testing purposes, of course – extremely enjoyable.
