The controversy began when Indian police in Punjab clashed with protesters who were demanding the arrest of those responsible for the desecration of the Sikh holy scripture. He took to social media to post a video of what he saw and also spoke to protesters who were able to inform him about human rights violations against Sikh in Punjab.
Simran Bohgunh, president of the Sikh Student Association, or SSA, said the organization arranged the protest in an attempt to educate students about what he called unrest and discrimination against Sikhs in Punjab.
The fact the Indian High Commission was closed for the Indian holiday of Dussehra that marks the triumph of good over evil is no excuse as road closure was expected to be the main issue.
However, initiating proceedings against the former Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Charanjit Sharma, the Punjab government has cleared the decks for chargesheeting him on account of negligence in duty and police firing on Sikh activists, who had been protesting sacrilege at Bargari in Faridkot district, official sources said. “During an altercation, one officer suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital”. The police initially used batons to attack thousands of the peaceful protestors and then resorted to use of water cannons to try and disperse protesters. No other persons were reported to be injured, they said.
“For some uneven reason the police were ill-prepared”, said Gurjeet Singh, National Press Secretary of the Sikh Federation UK. They said that India is a racist country which is actively working on a policy to criminalise its minority communities.
“The Metropolitan Police Service was aware of a planned demonstration at the Indian High Commission”.
“Many non-Sikh onlookers were astonished at the heavy handed reaction of the police to the peaceful Sikh protest”, said Singh.
“Whilst it was initially a peaceful protest the demonstrators blocked the roadway… and caused significant disruption to the central London road network”, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.
Additional police officers, including personnel on horseback, attended the scene when a small number of protests became violent, the statement continued.
Various Sikh organisations are jointly taking part in the protest, accusing the Modi government of anti-Sikh bias. “Many have recalled the events of 1984 when there was a complete disregard for Sikh lives and widespread police and army brutality”.
