Officers for the California Highway Patrol are piecing together how a sedan traveling on Placer Hills Road this afternoon careened down an embankment and flipped on its roof, resulting in the death of an occupant.
Officers were dispatched just before 7:30 p.m.to a possible traffic collision on the off-ramp. The Nissan driver was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries.
For unknown reasons, the two vehicles collided head-on on the highway east of Smith Station Road. An unidentified, 22-year-old man from Merced was driving eastbound with a female passenger, also age 22 and from Merced. She was reported in stable condition Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire while authorities closed Highway 120 for several hours. The crash remains under investigation but it does not appear alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The officers were placed on administrative leave, in accordance with CHP policy, the statement said, adding that their names “will not be released at this time”.
The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
