Do not invest more money than you can afford to lose.
“The Martian” regained the top spot on the North American box office charts over the weekend, dethroning spooky children’s flick ‘Goosebumps, ‘ industry estimates showed Sunday. It continues to outpace Interstellar through the same point in its run. Despite a CinemaScore of B-plus, the movie finished in 15th place.
The Martian also has an outside chance of beating The Bourne Ultimatum as Matt Damon’s highest grossing movie. Goosebumps would drop to second at $14.7 million.
In terms of other movies written by Sorkin, Moneyball launched to $19.5 million in late September 2011, while The Social Network debuted to $22.4 million. With a lot of competition coming out in November, Goosebumps has nearly no shot of joining the $100 million club.
Bridge of Spies came in third as predicted with a strong $11.3 million in total.
Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ Cold War drama Bridge of Spies rounds out the top three, while Vin Diesel’s action fantasy The Last Witch Hunter debuts at four, just ahead of animated comedy Hotel Transylvania 2. And the musical Jem and the Holograms, based on the old 1980s cartoon, was off-key as well, with a $1.3 million haul that’s the worst ever for a movie opening on 2,400-plus screens.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, the supposedly final chapter of the low-budget horror franchise, could only scare up $8.2 million, which was good enough for sixth. It made a little over 40% of its weekend on Friday. Like most horror offerings, it was extremely frontloaded. The movie opens in US theaters on Friday, October 9, 2015.
Steve Jobs, which stars Oscar hopeful Michael Fassbender as the Apple tech giant, snagged just $7.3 million and seventh place as it expanded nationwide. Tracking had suggested it would do $10 million-$12 million, not a bad start considering it is only playing in 1,656 theaters, compared to almost 3,000 locations for the last Paranormal Activity film.
