The film will lack the Twilight Zone part and instead will be a haunted house film. While the original ride at Walt Disney World features a story inspired by the Twilight Zone show, and includes a likeness and narration by creator and host Rod Serling, the new movie will not feature The Twilight Zone. Also, I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Haunted Mansion movie, which is another of my favorite rides (although I trust del Toro for that remake).
Tower of Terror was the first Disney theme park ride to be made into a movie, but it was adapted as a TV movie in 1997, starring Steve Guttenberg (Three Men and a Baby) and Kirsten Dunst (Jumanji, Spider-Man trilogy, Interview With The Vampire). The attraction is set at the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel, where visitors step inside an elevator, where they’re told stories about several people who have disappeared in that very same elevator over the years. The same must go for “Tower of Terror” film adaptations.
Big Fish and Frankenweenie writer John August has worked up a treatment for a potential film based on the attraction that sends you dropping into a terrifying art deco hotel with a lift struck by lightning and all manner of spooky goodness. Aside from the Pirates Of The Caribbean film franchise that’s working on a fifth installment for a 2017 bow, there was this summer’s underperformer Tomorrowland (casually based on the Disney parks’ version), and the long-in-the-works Jungle Cruise movie that now has Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson attached to star.
