TWO “modern day bushrangers” hiding in bushland on the Victorian-NSW border were spotted on CCTV in south-western NSW over the weekend. The Stoccos are believed to be running out of money.
Wagga Wagga Local Area Command crime manager Darren Cloake said detectives intend to charge the Stoccos with 13 offences each – including attempted murder – after the pair shot at NSW police during separate chases on October 16.
Police are appealing for the “assistance of the public” including farmers, truck drivers and people towing caravans to be the eyes and ears on the road.
Police are continuing their rigorous search for Australia’s most men- Gino Stocco, 57 and his son Mark Stocco, 35, who are believed to be still in the St. James area in western Wangaratta. Police are also trying to avoid a potential shoot-out.
Fugitive father and son Gino and Mark Stucco may have made their way to New South Wales after a possible sighting was reported at a service station on the Hume Highway at South Gundagai. While the manhunt has been underway for the past 10 days, the duo have actually been on the run from police in NSW and Queensland for eight years.
The vehicle was sporting alternative stolen South Australian plates S415AZL (black and white) when they did a drive off from a service station in Gundagai at 9pm on Saturday night.
Mark and Gino Stocco were spotted at a petrol station in NSW, where they drove off after failing to pay for $300 worth of fuel.
“They have driven lots and lots of kilometres into NSW back down into Victoria, particularly in the north-east”, Victoria’s Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent told ABC News 24 on Sunday.
“They’ve got to try and sleep somewhere, they’ll be threadbare”, he said.
“We’ve been hot on their heels … unfortunately part of the challenge for us is the weapon they have, a high-powered rifle, and we need to ensure we can protect the public, the police, the community and the fugitives themselves”, he said in Wangaratta yesterday.
