The new section included both a “Buy” and “Sell” interface, as well as a way to search across the marketplace for particular items using keywords. According to reports the social network is now testing a dedicated community for buyers and sellers called “Local Market“, apparently it’s being tested with a select number of users right now.
Anyone who has used Craigslist will familiar with the categories, which rang from cars, furniture and antiques to clothing, electronics, and books.
The Local Market categories are nearly the same as Craiglist’s. Not only that but also users can customize and filter items into different collections to easily find the stuff they are searching for. That’s because the Local Market was able to pull in items that people put up for sale in local groups, a feature Facebook added earlier this year. Those sale’ groups have definitely grown in popularity over the year, with many groups being organized locally as virtual garage sales that are always ongoing. In the iOS app, a new button appeared in the bottom navigation bar which took users to a categorized classified ads location, writes Nathan Ingraham for Engadget.
The fact that interest has been high means that building a dedicated marketplace seems like a good next step for Facebook.
Facebook is constantly testing new features and services as it looks to stay relevant and avoid becoming the next MySpace – even with 1.5 billion people logging in, long-term success isn’t always guaranteed. The Local Market test is only live in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, as well as in Auckland, New Zealand.
The social networking site is also testing other features for sale groups such as recommendations, saved searches, notifications to improve the experience of buying and selling on its platform.
