Google found that the number of searches for “man buns” has exploded in 2015, making it one of the most popular hairstyle searches of the past year. Men’s hair styles, braids, and colored hair. “The search queries are getting longer and longer. Men are trying to understand how to do a low fade, high fade, a short or long comb-over”.
Now that we only have about two months of the year left, we can take a look at all of the hair trends that cropped up this year (there were a lot!) and home in on the most popular ones.
“People have searched for styles” topknot more than the patron saint of the messy man bun, Jared Leto. Meanwhile on YouTube, the top five man-bun how-to videos have garnered 4.1 million views so far.
“I think the market is just in the beginning of picking up”, he said, and an increase in searches related to men’s hair is a sign of that.
Guys are also searching for this advice on the go. L’Oreal Feria’s line of ombre hair coloring products was sparked by working with Google on search analysis years ago. Rainbow hair searches have grown 148%. Different braid styles are trending including “goddess braids” and “box braids”.
Katy Perry has made purple hair hotter than the sun since she sported it on the red carpet of the 2015 Grammys. “The more we can help clients identify what trends are so they can jump on them early on, that’s the opportunity”.
The geniuses over at Google analyzed beauty-related searches from January 2013 to August 2015. Not many of them are actually doing it (in Manhattan and Brooklyn anyway, it’s pretty rare), but they’re taking the first step, which is spending a couple hours on Google looking at braver men who have already taken the leap.
