A new entertainment attraction is set to open in metro Atlanta, featuring a theme park based on the movie, “Hunger Games”. Assuming financing comes through, Avatron Smart Park would open near Atlanta by 2019.
According to the site, the chief executive of the studio, Jon Feltheimer, already had the idea when the first “Hunger Games” movie became a box-office hit in 2012. Along with “Hunger Games“, other Lionsgate films like “Step Up“, “Divergent” and “Twilight” could also provide inspiration for rides and attractions. But because the movie involved killing sprees, his team thought he wasn’t being serious about opening that kind of a theme park.
Speaking about the plans, Judith Rubin of the Themed Entertainment Association poured a bit of cold water on it all in an email to the New York Times, adding: ‘It’s always going to happen that more parks get announced then actually built’. The studio made earlier announcements for an exhibit, The Hunger Games: The Exhibition, now touring museums and other institutions in the US, a StageAround live theater production to launch in the United Kingdom next year and the Motiongate theme park to debut in Dubai next year. Potential Hunger Games rides include a recreation of Katniss Everdeen’s mining town, Peeta Mellark’s bakery, and roller coaster rides based on the movies’ high-speed Capitol trains, according to Palen.
“We are proud to introduce AVATRON Park to the great state of Georgia and American audiences everywhere”, said James Ram, vice chairman. A simulator ride will also resemble a hovercraft, which will take the guests on a tour of Katniss Everdeen’s fictional country, Panem.
The Hunger Games’ final film Mockingjay – Part 2 opens worldwide on Nov 20.
The company’s approach is to license the film properties to external developers rather than developing the parks themselves.
