A woman says she feels “traumatized” and is thinking about moving out of Minnesota after another woman allegedly attacked her in a restaurant because she was speaking in a foreign language.
“Emotionally that has destroyed me”, Jama said. The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for hate crime charges.
Burchard-Risch is accused of yelling at the woman, who was sitting in a nearby booth, because she was upset that the woman was speaking a foreign language.
Managers at the Applebee’s attempted to remove Burchard-Risch from the restaurant, according to the Star Tribune, but she refused and instead threw a drink on Jama and then smashed a beer mug in her face with a “roundhouse punch motion”.
“The current charge is insufficient to communicate the seriousness of and possible bias motive for the alleged attack”, CAIR-MN executive director Jaylani Hussein said.
The victim, who immigrated to the United States from Kenya, where Swahili is one of several common languages, suffered deep cuts on her nose, right eyebrow and lower lip, according to the complaint.
The aggressor has since been charged with third degree assault.
Authorities say that’s when managers stepped in and tried to get Burchard-Risch to leave. Should she be found guilty, she will be sentenced to “imprisonment for not more than five years or to payment of a fine of not more than $10,000 (Ksh102, 300), or both” according to Minnesota laws.
