The Pebble Time Round is Pebble’s first round smartwatch, and the company originally announced it in late September.
The new Pebble Time Round smartwatch will hit selected retail stores across the United States starting November 8, the smartwatch maker Pebble has confirmed. The Apple Watch is thicker and has a larger footprint, which makes the Pebble Time Round a much more comfortable wearable device.
In order to install new applications for your watch, you need to get it paired with your smartphone, by downloading the Pebble app on your iPhone or Android device.
Pebble is breaking out of its square-shaped mold and releasing a round smartwatch with an attractive design, but also a few tradeoffs.
The casing is 7.5 millimeters thin and it weighs 28 grams – half the weight of the 42 mm Apple Watch. With this new Pebble, you only get about 2 days on a single charge, which isn’t much better than an Android Wear device. The round watch face comes in three potential finishes: black, silver, and rose gold. Metal band options are slated for later this year.
The bottom line: Pebble’s step-up all-steel smartwatch has added battery life and a more durable feel, but it’s basically a tiny upgrade to the less expensive Pebble Time. The Round also features quick charging that can get you a full day’s use in just 15 minutes.
The value of the Pebble watch perhaps lies not in what is, but what it is not. Quite honestly, I can’t think of many tasks that would be better accomplished with a smartwatch than my phone.
All of the Pebble OS features are present, including the past, present and future Timeline, notifications, apps and interchangeable watchfaces, and there are plenty that work splendidly with the round aspect already.
Still, the Pebble Time Round is a decent place to start if you’re looking for a smart watch that will keep you in the know without feeling too overwhelming. According to initial reviews, the latest edition of Pebble watch provides a couple of days’ worth of battery life as opposed to the week-long battery in the previous models.
In the end, the Pebble Time Round is for folks who want a smartwatch that looks more like a traditional timepiece around their wrist.
