Two Perth surfers missing in Mexico were last seen driving through unsafe cartel territory where their burnt-out van was found.
Dean Lucas’ girlfriend Josie Cox posted on Facebook that the families “have had some distressing developments which we have not yet had confirmed,”
West Australians Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman have not contacted their families since November 20, and have been missing since.
Two bodies were found inside the van, however they were so badly burnt they could not be immediately identified.
Coleman’s girlfriend, Andrea Gomez, told The Associated Press that she and Lucas’ partner, Josie Cox, will travel to the Sinaloan capital of Culiacan on Monday to see if two bodies reportedly found inside the burned van are the Australians.
A fundraising page has also been set up to assist the families of Mr. Lucas and Mr. Coleman to travel to Mexico.
She said that Ms. Cox was bringing Mr. Lucas’s dental records for matching and she had “pieces of dreadlocks” that Mr. Coleman had given her.
“They’re such good guys and such good people”, she told Canada Global News.
The pair are believed to have caught a ferry across the Gulf of California with their van on November 20, and disembarked at Topolobampo at 10pm.
In a statement, DFAT said the families and partners of friends and keen surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, both 33 years old, are aware that their van has been discovered and that “a tragic event has occurred”.
One of the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, rose to worldwide infamy pulling off an incredible escape from a Mexican prison in July.
She said it was “so out of character” for him not to call. They were supposed to drive to Guadalajara after this, and never arrived. “Until such time that the authorities confirm what has happened, the families respectfully ask the media to not speculate further”.
A statement from the Australian foreign ministry said consular officials were working with Mexican authorities to locate the two men.
