BIRMINGHAM -Conflict between Birmingham mayor William Bell and the city council boiled over into a physical altercation on Tuesday between Bell and councilman Marcus Lundy, according to council president Jonathon Austin. When asked for comment on this, however, Birmingham Police Chief A. C. Roper declined to comment.
Lundy was taken to the hospital by ambulance, while Bell was taken by a private vehicle.
According to the AP, reporters covering the council meeting said they heard a man shout “No, No!” during the rumble, which took place in a small room outside the chamber.
Members scurry past double doors decorated with Christmas wreaths toward the noise as the gavel slams down, and a perplexed look crosses the face of a man who was making a presentation.
Paramedics were seen leaving the mayor’s office just before 11 a.m.
Austin showed photos of scrapes on the back of Lundy’s left leg, Odom issued a statement saying an arrest warrant would be taken out on Lundy. A formal police report has been initiated and will be ready for release in the next hour. “From there, the magistrate will swear out a warrant for the arrest of Councilor Lundy”, April Odom said in a statement.
City Council President Johnathan Austin blamed the incident on the mayor, calling it a “sad day when council members are attacked while trying to do the job that they were elected to do”. Lundy’s condition was not immediately known. The alleged assault only ended when two of Lundy’s aides arrived. She said it’s against state law for a councilman to drive a city vehicle.
Bell told the officer Lundy then “grabbed him from behind and put him in a chokehold”. Bell’s office denied it.
“This right here is ridiculous”.

Councilwoman Kim Rafferty said there have been power struggles between Bell, 66, and the council for a while.
