A pair of dominant Wisconsin football running backs have been reunited in New England as the Patriots signed Montee Ball Tuesday, adding him to the practice squad on a roster that already includes James White.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted that Ball has been signed to the practice squad.
According to ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss, running back LeGarrette Blount, who left Sunday’s game against Houston with a hip injury, was also seen Tuesday on crutches.
Ball ran a 4.66 40 yard dash at the combine, with a 1.62 10 yard split, and a respectable 9’10 broad jump and 6.88 three cone time. He rushed for 559 yards and four touchdowns on 120 carries as a rookie, but had a rocky 2014 campaign that was cut short by a groin injury that eventually landed him on injured reserve. After coming on strong toward the tail end of the 2013 season, Ball was expected to be Denver’s running back of the future. In two seasons in Denver, he ran for 731 yards and five touchdowns. From there, C.J. Anderson usurped primary rushing responsibilities and never looked back. I know he got to carry the ball a lot, but we didn’t do a good job up front for him as far as giving him a lot of room to work.

The Patriots have another running back in town.
Considering his solid vision between the tackles and ability to power through contact, Ball can still make a career for himself as a situational rusher as long as his body cooperates.
