Florida added more people than California for the first time in almost a decade.
The new U.S. Census estimates released Tuesday show that Nebraska’s population grew by 0.7 percent to 1.896 million by July 1 of this year.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that North Carolina has become the ninth state to surpass the 10 million mark in population. That ranked Florida second in number of new residents, as well as fifth in percentage gain, with a 1.84 percent year-over-year increase.
The state has held the distinction as the nation’s fastest growing for the past four years.
With an aging population and young adults delaying both marriage and childbirth, a sudden surge in natural gains – births minus deaths – isn’t what is driving the increase.
“Those of us who live in North Carolina know why this state is such a great place to live”, Gov. Pat McCrory said.
New York’s total population is estimated at 19.8 million people, growing by almost 47,000 residents, or 2.4 percent in the 12 months studied.
In addition to the 50 states and the District of Columbia, the new statistics also include estimates for Puerto Rico. Its population increased 2.3 percent, the Census Bureau said.
Ben Bolender, chief of the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Branch, said the annual state population estimates are used to help determine distribution of federal money, as well as government and private sector services. South Dakota matched Minnesota at 0.6 percent with 858,469 people and Iowa’s population went up 0.5 percent to 3,123,899.
