UK gov’t to hold emergency session on flooding in north

The United Kingdom Met Office issued two “red” weather warnings as hundreds of residents across northern England were evacuated from their homes and the army was deployed to build flood defenses.

In addition, the Environment Agency (EA) issued 31 severe flood warnings, which signal danger to life as well as hundreds of standard flood warnings, which mean that immediate action is required.

The Met Office’s most serious weather warning was issued for Lancashire on Saturday with a risk of “widespread river flooding”.

Severe flood warnings were issued for properties near the River Foss towards the center of York and areas of Huntington, Tang Hall, Osbaldwick, The Groves and Layer Thorpe.

The York City Council said the Ouse River was expected to rise to over 5 meters – close to its highest recorded level of 5.40 meters.

“Rain continues to fall over the Northern Pennines, with rivers responding accordingly”. Around 12000 homes were also reported to be without power, although this has since been restored.

Lancashire bore the brunt of the flooding alongside Yorkshire on Saturday.

A picturesque 200-year-old pub, The Waterside, in the greater Manchester area, collapsed and part of the structure was swept away by the River Irwell.

In north Wales, some drivers were forced to abandon their waterlogged cars in some areas.

Rory Stewart, the flood minister, suggested climate change might explain the current high levels of rain, which he described as unprecedented.

Residents of the Windsor House residential home, in Acomb, York, were moved to other care homes earlier after the basement flooded.

Truss said: “I would like to again pay tribute to the tireless work of frontline staff over the last month and the Christmas period, and the extraordinary resilience of the people affected, which I have seen first-hand”.

“I want to reassure residents that emergency services are doing all they can and we will continue to do so until this situation improves”. People were advised to only drive if necessary.

The government also pledged to review flood defenses.

The starting point in understanding the flood risks of one’s target location is to visit the Environment Agency’s website and enter the post code for the area, this will give an over view of the local flood map.

“More troops are being deployed as part of a plan to do whatever is needed”, he wrote on Twitter.

Ms. Truss said the priority was to protect lives and homes.

In Wales, where there are 4 Environment Agency flood warnings and 24 flood alerts, the government says flood and coastal risk management is a “key priority”.

If only the same could be said for the Government’s response to this crisis – and previous incidents of flooding.

She said: “It’s just horrific, really bad”. The government can and must do more to help people.

Red Cross volunteers are working in three rest centers in Chorley, Salford and Bury.
