The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) has decided to block all fraudulent websites that end with the .su domain and that offer financial services in the country, the bank said in a notice over the weekend. The ban will cover websites that offer dealing with financial markets and national payment systems.
In addition, the CBR is also a designated authority with regards to the domains .ru, and .рф.
Following partnership agreements, the bank was entitled the domain rights for .su websites by the Internet Development Fund and for .ru and .рф websites by the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ, an administrator of top level national domains .рф and .ru.
The Bank of Russia will allow the regulator and domain name registrars to more efficiently detect and block websites used for fishing, unauthorised access to third party information systems, dissemination and handling of malicious software (botnet management).
New powers will allow the Bank of Russia to protect citizens’ personal data and money from cyber-fraudsters, mitigate reputation risks of financial organizations and lenders.
The CBR is Russia’s financial mega-regulator which oversees the banking and all other financial markets in the country.
